COLLECTING COLLECTIBLES

There have always been folk who will spend their money on things

just so thay can look at them. Wherever they are kept – glass cabinet,

on a table, on a shelf or in a bank deposit box, they are things they MUST

have!

When I was a boy, like a lot of others, I started to collect stamps. I

acquired a stamp album and delighted myself in separating, from a huge

packet of stamps bought for next to nothing, those stamps that I hoped

would be worth a lot of money./

But I guess my enthusiasm wasn’t sufficiently permanent to keep at

coll;ecting stamps.  I never did find and really good ones and as the

summer days and school holidays arrived, the outdoors beckoned with

cricket and a host of other things which replaced my stamp collecting.

Nevertheless, there are many today whose business is philately.

Collecting is a “thing” people do. Whether it be old newspapers, rare

porcelaine, vintage cars or wine, statues – the list is endless.

BUT, a new collectible has walked onto the scene in the last 5 years.

The collectimg of REBORN BABY DOLLS.

These dolls are exceptionally lifelike and their manufacture is time

consuming, painstaking and world-wide and here are a few phrases

taken from the pages of some websites:

============================

“Sheila Michael's "Original Award Winning Dolls" are now available to collectors around the world.  Babies range in size from a few inches to life-size.  Works from past to present are featured in Sheila Michael Original Dolls. Each doll is a hand-sculptured work of art from polymer clay using no molds in the sculpting process.  Sheila's babies are now available in Solid Silicone, limited editions.  Every doll is made to resemble a real baby or child”

“Lee Middleton sculpted her first dolls to look like her own two children, and soon, relatives and friends asked Lee to sculpt dolls that looked like their children. Word spread quickly about Lee's talent and she soon found herself in charge of an unexpected "cottage industry." Supply and demand forced Lee to continuously find larger locations for production. In 1989, Lee opened a manufacturing facility in Belpre, Ohio. The facility produced more baby dolls a year than any other manufacturer in America, and the Mayor of Belpre declared the city to be "The Baby Doll Capital of the World."”

“Secrist is the largest manufacturer of vinyl reborn doll kits, reborning supplies, and training materials. We support your artistic endeavour by offering the BEST instructional DVDs to help you create a beautiful vinyl newborn baby. We make it easy to get started with our reborning starter kits that have all the necessary supplies so you can start with the best!”

This business has become so popular that there are people who want to get into it, but have little or no knowledge of it, so training courses have been ste up to enable those who want to try rheir hand at making these dolls can

do so.

Reborn Baby Dolls is a new art form, but one that’s growing very fast. The

dolls are very lifelike and realistic and have become very, very collectible.

Twins and triplets are available as is a whole range of clothes, dummies, etc.

There is also a range of reborn baby dolls for children, but they are different

from the collectible items. yet sell extremely well.

I can see a huge future in this business.
